Dumb Luck Saves the President
Amusing how without seeing the details of the Mueller report, all and sundry had prepped or published columns. The president ran ahead trying to frame the news cycle, monsieur innocent, naturally, with a dash of treason pointed toward his opponents. It’s good old-fashioned prime time TV, if you didn’t know.
He’s selling ads.
I was always sceptical of collusion, the kind that lands you in hot, scalding water. If my impression of President Trump is of an ignorant opportunist, who measures success by the amount of pussy he grabs, it seemed a stretch he would actually have the nous to collude with Russia. While it’s fun to call him Putin’s puppet, Putin doesn’t need him. Let’s face it, why spend your time managing Trump when you could simply run rings around him.
Did Trump take advantage while staying an arms length away from anything incriminating? For sure. The president behaved like a guilty man because he didn’t know whether he had crossed the line, or not. He knew enough and it scared him. He attempted to control the investigation by firing Comey and denigrating the Mueller investigation at every turn. Innocent? No. Guilty of what, is to be determined.
Trump thrashed around like I did when I discovered my favourite drink of the winter was discontinued – a real crisis – but my incoherent rage only lasted twenty minutes as opposed to his two years.
It’s still astonishing how nothing sticks. Any other president would be in their death throes. It doesn’t matter where you stand on Trump, the lines are so ingrained, convincing people of anything other than what they believe is pointless. And therein lies the shift about to take place.
Trump is actually irrelevant, it’s no longer about him, it’s about the people, particularly those who voted for him. And what could be worse for a narcissist, if it’s not about him. Any political strategist will seize that – hopefully they see it.
Of course the president will tout the economy as his success, but that only proves any muppet could’ve inherited the Obama economy and not screw up. With precious little economic policy until the massive tax cuts for his friends – and some notable enemies – it could prove to be another piece of luck to go with the dumb luck of what he inherited, and the dumb luck he didn’t cross the prosecution line with Russia.
